Grace Vivian Huess was born April 15, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pa. The identity of her parents is unknown.

Shortly after her birth, she was left in the care of the Mary Hannond Home in Hoboken, N.J., from which she was adopted by H. William and Julia Stehn.

Educated at public schools in Weehawken, N.J., she graduated from Weehawken High School in 1933, and went to work for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City.

On Oct. 3, 1937, she married Herbert Heide. The couple was blessed with one son, Gary.

During World War II, she served as a nurse’s aide.

When her son was old enough, she worked at several jobs outside the home, including as a telephone operator for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company and as a data entry clerk for Concordia Publishing House in St. Louis, Mo.

For most of her life, she was an active member of the Lutheran Church, though for the last several years she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in St. Helens.

Her handwork kept her busy throughout her life.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Gary and Joan Heide of St. Helens; granddaughters, Kitty Heide of St. Helens, Kriss Fincher and her husband Warren of St. Helens, and Kalli Clevenger-Benson of Denver, Colo.; and great-grandson, Nicholas Fincher of St. Helens. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Herb in 1977.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Helens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or First Lutheran Church in St. Helens.
