Town gets big break on flood insurance

ADVERTISEMENTS

Scappoose residents vulnerable to floods are going to receive good news with their national flood insurance premium notices.

Their rates are going down 15 percent. This will affect 113 policy holders in Scappoose.

Scappoose officials have participated in the National Flood Insurance Program since 1988.

Officials participate in the community rating system, a voluntary program that encourages community flood management that exceeds the minimum insurance requirements.

This federal program insures homeowners and businesses vulnerable to floods against losses. Before the program started, it was nearly impossible to buy flood insurance in any area susceptible to flooding.

By participating in the community rating system, the city is awarded points in 10 areas. These areas include:

Maintaining elevation certificates for new and substantially improved buildings.

Furnishing flood information.
