A memorial service for Robert Hales, the Scappoose Rural Fire District volunteer firefighter who was killed in an Aug. 17 car crash, is prompting the Oregon Department of Transportation to scale back Highway 30 on Monday.
The service is scheduled to take place at Scappoose High School starting at 10 a.m.
Roughly 200 fire engines from throughout the state and 100 other vehicles will participate in Hales’ funeral procession from Scappoose High School to the Columbia County Fairgrounds. The procession will start after the service at noon and will travel northbound on Highway 30, turning onto Gable Road to reach the fairgrounds.
Hales and his family loved 4-H and working with the Columbia County Fair, where a reception is planned after the service.
ODOT officials have told local planners that they intend to limit traffic on Highway 30 to one lane of travel in both directions during the one-hour processional.
“There will be one lane going north and one lane going south,” said Capt. Mike Gorsuch of the Columbia River Fire and Rescue, who is coordinating traffic for the service.
High School Way adjacent to Scappoose High School will also be heavily affected.
