ADVERTISEMENTS
The National Weather Service has posted a flood watch for parts of Columbia County, including Vernonia. The watch, which informs residents that there's potential for flooding based on current weather forecasts, continues through the afternoon on Friday, Nov. 20.
The service predicts a night of heavy rain — around one or two inches — in northwest Oregon and urges people in the area of the flood watch to be aware of the danger of landslides and debris flows that could impact structures below steep slopes. The service also advises people living in areas prone to flooding to be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
A flood watch is less severe than a flood warning, which states that flooding is in progress.
Vernonia experienced a severe bouts of flooding in 1996 and 2007.
As of 2:07 p.m. on Thursday, Scappoose and St. Helens are not in the flood watch area.

Chicken Little
It's fall. The government continues to cover its hind end with endless warnings and watches. I say we have one big warning at the beginning of the rainy season, and be done with it. By this time, most of us should know that heavy rains bring floods.
And if you live in a flood zone, be ready to evacuate.
All these constant warnings everytime we get some rain for a few days starts to wear on the psyche after awhile.
