Rainier
A Rainier man was arrested on Thanksgiving for allegedly colliding with three separate vehicles on I-5 and attempting to flee from police in a high-speed chase.
Oregon State Police say Eric Ryan Witt, 39, hit three vehicles on the highway with his gold 1995 Honda Accord when he was near Woodburn on Nov. 26.
When troopers responded around 12:10 p.m. they attempted to pull over Witt, but he took off at speeds up to 107 mpg, said OSP Sgt. Bob Charpentier. The chase didn’t last long, because Witt eventually ended up hitting heavy holiday traffic, police report.
But then Witt, whose license was suspended, allegedly began driving on the right shoulder of the freeway for a short time before an OSP trooper used a tactical intervention technique, and slammed into the Honda, forcing it to stop. No one was hurt and all of the vehicles incurred only minor damage.
Witt was charged with misdemeanor hit and run, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and felony attempt to elude in a vehicle.
Clatskanie
After playing chess for only a year, a Clatskanie elementary school student came in first at the recent Oregon All-Stars Invitation Chess Tournament in Salem.
Jesse Norgren, 9, swept the competition in his age division at the Oct. 9 tournament, winning five out of five games. Norgren first got an interest in chess last year and since then has been taking weekly lessons.
