County lands $800,000 federal appropriation for transit center

ADVERTISEMENTS

U.S. Rep. David Wu's office announced Thursday that Columbia County will receive an $800,000 federal appropriation to develop and improve its multi-modal transit center in St. Helens.

The allocation is part of a larger federal disbursement to Oregon totaling $113 million that is part of an omnibus package combining multiple appropriations bills.

The Senate has still to approve the funding package, and is expected to do so shortly, according to a press release. From there it will go to President Obama for his signature.

In Columbia County, the transit dollars will be used to purchase land and construct the transit center, including addition of a new administration office, vehicle maintenance and storage, and a carpool park-and-ride facility.

"My main goal is to get the public transit center in operation," said Janet Wright, who applied for the federal funds as the county's point person for its public transit system, CC Rider.

In a prepared statement, Wu said the funds are part of the federal effort to stimulate the economy out of the current recession, and that the allocation is an investment in the future.

"“We must continue to invest in our communities during this economic downturn in order to provide new jobs and the foundation for sustained economic growth," he said. " In addition to helping strengthen our economy, these funds will be used to educate our future workforce, protect our environment, and care for those in need.”

Of additional note, $300,000 of the Oregon allocation will fund a crisis hotline for returning soldiers and their families, and $470,000 is targeting a program aimed at addressing prescription drug abuse in Oregon, specifically among young people, according to the release.

Also, the Vernonia School District is slated to receive $150,000 to buy supplies and equipment lost or damaged during the December 2007 flood.

It remains to be seen if this project brings home "pork" to Columbia County.. Will they hire a local construction company to build this project? It certainly should!! This county needs all the help it can get. As far as for David Wu, I can count on one finger the good he's done for this county. He needs to be replaced.

Re: County lands $800,000 federal appropriation for transit center

What David Wu fails to tell you is that all this money is deficit spending. So, he is borrowing money from our children. His fiscal stupidty will result in $9.6 trillion being added to the National debt in less than 4 years. This will add $800 billion to each federal budget year in just interest payments.

The "suicide hotline" is duplication of effort since the VA is already funded for this.

He is using borrowed money to pander to the veteran vote, because he "Gave Aid and Comfort to the Enemy" on the house floor under George Bush. While our troops were trying to win in Fallujah, David Wu bad mouthed the Iraq Surge Ploicy. Now he supports a Surge in Afghnaistan, and is all to willing to vote for his own earmarks as an attachment to yet another omnibus extension.

This is the second omnibus extension which now total over $850 billion in deficit spending.

David Wu not only wants to use borrowed money in an attempt to stiffen his Veteran credentials, he wants us to simply overlook that it is our childrens futures.

I cannot forgive this level of manipulation and hypocrisy at the expense of our children. David Wu uses borrowed money to make himself look good, while voting to enslave our children with deficit spending, interest on the debt, cap and Trade energy tax, and health care! As it is now, the federal budget is estimated to go from $3.1 trillion under Bush to $5.00 trillion under Obama by 2012. If we add in the government take over of health care and David Wus propencity to under bid and over commit, the fedseral budget will skyrocket after 2012. Instead of 33 percent of GDP, the federal budget will be on track to become 40 or 50 percent of GDP. All of this will be paid for by your children.

David Wu is simply a Yes man for the government takeover of our economy and enslavement of our children. He is a socialist combined with fiscal retardation!

Dearest "Broadhead" you hit it right on the head! this is the bigest waste of money in this county I have seen yet. Bring jobs? A few construction jobs for a short time mabey. What is the long term investment? Five or six full time $10 an hour jobs maybe? Give me a break. The land they will be purchasing used to employ 200 plus people at one time. That is the kind of job growth this area needs. Start spending OUR stimulas money on those kind of investments and industry and I will be behind this administration all the way. This is nothing but a joke!
