ADVERTISEMENTS

Mark John Gohlmann, the former St. Helens postal worker who was arrested for sexually abusing a teenage boy in September, will serve 30 days in jail after pleading guilty this week.

Gohlmann, 51, was convicted Jan. 12 on one count of third-degree sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.

He was originally arrested Sept. 4 after his wife called police and reported to them that she walked in on Gohlmann sexually touching a 16-year-old male who was living with them, according to Lt. Terry Moss of the St. Helens Police Department.

During the subsequent investigation, Moss said, police reported learning that Gohlmann would bring young men home with him to smoke marijuana. The endangering the welfare of a minor charge stems from one of those incidences, Moss said.

Gohlmann was removed from his post office position after his arrest. He was out on bail until he turned himself in on Wednesday.

Moss said Gohlmann exhibited classic child grooming behaviors that are common in child sex abuse cases – befriending the victim, lowering their inhibitions, putting them in a vulnerable position and then abusing them.

“Those of us that do child abuse investigations recognize the pattern,” Moss said. “It’s really sad.”

Former postal worker? What in the hell does where he used to work have to do with anything.

I once read about a "former" newspaper reporter who was charged with "lewd" acts with a sheep.

Kelly sounds like another brainiac that can't tell the difference between gays and perverts. Another Fox graduate.

I can't believe it, this man was always nice to me when I came in to the post office I am so disappointed & sick. I liked this guy, I never knew he was a creep & that he is :( You never know who the pervert is going to be in our community - who would have thought he could be one, not me. I'm so glad his wife walked in on it to save this young man from further harm..

So one was doing an 18 year old, the other someone a little younger. You condone one but not the other. You sound like a Reed graduate.

Ok Stinky one, pay attention. One was between 2 "Adults", the incident mentioned in the this article was not. There is a huge difference. Like it or not.

Re: Former St. Helens postal worker convicted of sex abuse

I'm appaled by the "justice" done. Admit your guilty of sexual abuse and only receive 30 days in jail? This is not a theft charge, this is ruining a childs life. I am sickened by the result, and sad for this young boy who will not only think about what was done to him for the next 30 days, but every day for the rest of his life. Way to go Columbia County.

Maybe our county motto should be "Live here, commit sexual abuse of a child, and get a slap on the wrist"

I am so sorry for his family. An it really bothers me that he has so little regard for them that he would do this not only to his victim but his family as well. I applaud his daughter for having the courage to turn him in. I am sure that was one of the hardest things she ever had to do. I pray that they all get help and what ever made him do this awful thing can be resolved.

Hey Mark: There is a job opening in the St. Helens School District as a Track Coach. That would be a good way for you to continue your pattern of abuse. At least your family wouldn't be walking in on you, and mabye you would think twice when someone beats the living tar out of you for what you have done.

Did anybody see Mark's letter to the public and his wife in the paper? I can't believe his wife still wants to be married to him and that people are still thinking he's not guilty! His wife caught him and his daughter called the cops! HELLO!

Perhaps it would be a good time for the newspaper to do a full article on the patterns of this type of abuse. We would like to protect ourselves and those we know by being more informed.
