A change in the Scappoose city parks ordinance means a new sense of freedom for dog owners and their pups who were looking for a place to run free.
Although an off-leash area in Veterans Park had already been approved by the City Council earlier this year, there is now an official spot open on the north side, across the creek. Right now a simple sign and a few upgraded fences are all that sets this portion apart. But with a ramped-up fundraising effort, a group of local dog owners hopes to soon find thousands of dollars to build new fencing and other amenities.
On a recent afternoon, Jill Schull (right) and her two dogs, Maggie and KC, played fetch in the new area. Schull and others in the Scappoose Dog Owners Group have only raised $300 towards the estimated $11,000 they say it would take to hire labor and buy new cyclone fencing, but with a series of upcoming fundraisers, including one on Sept. 10 at the Dockside Restarant in St. Helens, the group hopes to inch forward.
