The St. Helens Lady Lions weren’t really into travelling to West Albany on the last Saturday of spring break for a non-league softball game.
The cold rain and slippery conditions didn’t work in their favor, and the team finished with a 9-1 loss.
“We wimped out,” St. Helens coach Jeff Edwards said. With the damp weather forecast in mind, Edwards didn’t think the game would be played. Assurances that their field was ready sent the Lady Lions on the road. The field was indeed in good condition, but just as the game started, so did the rains.
“They should have called it in the second inning,” Edwards said, “but we played on.”
St. Helens started the game well, and took the early lead with a run in the top of the second. As it turned out, it was the only run they would get.
Melissa Ralls led off with a walk and Kayla VanDolah went in to run for her. Jessica Sanchez then lined a shot up the middle to move VanDolah to third. She went to second on a passed ball. A single by Kaylee Smith sent the runner home.
Errors, mental and actual during a torrential downpour, plus a walk, and two singles, allowed West Albany to slip two runs across the plate in the second. A walk, error, walk, and a two-run single upped the score to 4-1 in the third. A double, single, and another error pushed two more over in the fourth. In the sixth, an error, two doubles, some passed balls, and another error added three more runs to the final tally.
