STILL GOT THE BALL—Scappoose’s Paul Revis shows the ball after tagging out a Hollywood player in the championship game of the Little League District 1 Tournament last Thursday. Scappoose posted a 12-3 win and moves on to the state tournament at Southridge High School in Beaverton this week.

The Scappoose Little League Juniors baseball team left no doubt. They fought their way through the district tournament unbeaten, spanking Hollywood in the championship game, 12-3, on Thursday night.
With the district crown, Scappoose moves on to the Little League Junior State Tournament at Southridge High School in Beaverton. Scappoose plays District 4 champion Murrayhill at 6 p.m. Saturday in the opening game of the tournament.
District Championship Game
Scappoose might have been forgiven for being complacent going into Thursday’s championship game with Hollywood. They had their best pitcher on the mound, and Hollywood had used up theirs in a 9-5 loss to Scappoose earlier in the week.
The 95 degree heat might also have slowed down the 13-14 year-olds.
In the end, though, Hollywood was no match for Scappoose, even though they stayed within range for awhile. Scappoose overcame some early miscues and went on to an impressive 12-3 win.
Manager Joe Backus was happy to have his ace, son Kody Backus, eligible to pitch in the championship. “It worked out well for us,” he said as the game got under way.
The Scappoose club wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Paul Revis led off the affair with a single down the third baseline. He stole second and third. Backus drilled a high sacrifice fly to center and Revis scored. Walks to Kyle Durvin and Tyler Schillereff were followed by Sam Padgett’s hard shot that bounced off the Hollywood shortstop and out of reach of the third baseman. Both runners scored.
An error and a double gave Hollywood a lone run in the bottom of the frame.
In the second, Scappoose got a run when Jojo Duran was hit by a pitch, Michael Lohman reached base on an infield single, Revis walked, and Kyle Kramer walked.
A single and a triple helped Hollywood keep pace with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Hollywood pulled within one run in the bottom of the third after loading the bases. Backus would earn a strike out for the second out, but then a batter stuck his head in over the plate and got smacked. That sent another run home. Backus fielded a grounder and snapped it to third for the last out. Hollywood wouldn’t score again.
In the fourth, Kramer walked, and Backus followed with a single. A sharp single to right center from Durvin scored Kramer. Schillereff then singled to send Backus home. Scappoose led 6-3.
Backus got out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth by striking out Hollywood’s best player.
In the fifth inning Revis tripled and Kramer drove him home for Scappoose. Hollywood would manage to load the bases with two outs, but again Backus got a strike out to end the threat.
Scappoose would send 11 batters to the plate in the sixth for five runs and the final 12-3 lead. Durvin started things with a double, and then stole third. Schillereff followed with a walk and then Sam Padgett popped in a bloop single, scoring Durvin. Branden Tardif reached base on a fielder’s choice, then Duran doubled to score a run. Michael Lohman hit a sacrifice fly to center for one more run, and then Revis walked. Kyle Kramer’s single would score two.
Backus ended his time on the mound with a strike out and Durvin came in. He held Hollywood scoreless for the next five outs.
