TRIPPED UP—Scappoose’s Cory Hendryx (13) and a Yamhill-Carlton player get tangled during last week’s playoff match. YC posted a 4-0 win over Scappoose.

There was no miracle comeback, no three second-half goals, and there is no further playoffs for the Scappoose boys’ soccer team.

The Indians fell to Yamhill-Carlton last Tuesday in a playoff battle over the third playoff berth to the 4A state finals.

“We took them too lightly,” Scappoose Coach Bob Deuker said. “We got down 1-0 in the first half and we didn’t play that well or aggressively in the second half. We made some mistakes on defense and everything went against us in the second half.”

YC had scored early in the contest, but Scappoose only allowed the one first half goal. The Tigers got a goal just over two minutes into the second half when the Scappoose keeper misjudged the ball and it was tapped home. A one on one shot succeeded just five minutes later and the match was over. Yamhill-Carlton added one more at the 22 minute mark.

“We played good and hard all the way, but we were just never in it. I could tell right away that the fire wasn’t there. We won against Tillamook and the aggressiveness just didn’t carry over,” Deuker added.

“We lost, but I’m pleased with the whole outcome of the season,” Deuker said. “We made it into the playoffs and came back and beat Tillamook.

Scappoose played shorthanded much of the season. Deuker likes to carry 17-18 on the varsity, but was down to just 13 on the season and much of the year had one or two players injured.

Deuker said the game was a little emotional because he’ll lose five players he has had with him either three or four years. Cory Hendryx has been on the varsity since a freshman, as have Jacob Kienlen, Jacob Davison, and Travis Herrington. Brady Dieter has been with the varsity three years.

He said he told the team not to feel bad (about the YC loss) that it had been a “good season all the way around. It’s a team effort. Sometimes you hit it all and sometimes you don’t.”

Deuker said the Indians have some good players coming back and are looking forward to the next season. He said he would be talking with Scappoose Athletic Director Jim Jones about playing St. Helens next season.
