The Scappoose High girls’ golf team wants to head back to state this season, only this time they want to go as the league champions.
“I told them it was ours to lose,” fourth-year coach Kord Schull said. “I’m impressed with how the girls are doing. We’re playing better now than when last season ended.”
Schull has just seven girls out for the team this season, but they have most of the team that took second in the league last season behind Seaside. They also finished eighth in the state tournament, their best finish ever.
“We went to state the previous year, but finished next to last. This time we had a top 10 finish and were almost fifth,” he said.
The girls back include Alex Stirling, a sophomore and seniors Devyn Clark, Rachel Rafferty, Tiffany Brungardt, and Taylor Seesholtz. Natalie Wilson, another sophomore returns, as well.
Additionally, Scappoose picked up Christine Mapes, a sophomore, and the daughter of boys’ head golf coach Jeff Mapes. Stirling is the daughter of pro golfer Jeff Stirling, the boys’ head coach last season.
Stirling, Rafferty, Seesholtz were all varsity players last season, and Clark played varsity the year before.
