ADVERTISEMENTS
The Scappoose High boys’ golf team has a new coach, many new players, and a ways to go to be competitive this season.
The new coach is Jeff Mapes, a local attorney, who lives in Scappoose with his wife, and two children. He says he has been playing golf most of his life. He’s donated a lot of time to the school district: serving on the high school site council, district budget committee; long-range planning committee; and currently on the Citizens’ Oversight Committee (school bond expenditures).
“It’s a rebuilding year,” he noted. “We have two varsity players from last year’s team, both seniors–Jacob Kienlen and Jacob Davison.”
Of the 18 players out for the team, only three played as jayvees last season–Corbin Clark, Tyler Muir, Zach Zang. Most of the players are sophomores and freshmen.
“Many have not played golf before,” Mapes said, “which isn’t altogether bad because they haven’t developed bad habits. No golfer becomes good without decent fundamentals so to date we’ve worked on grip, set up and some basics of the golf swing.
“They’re a wonderful group of young men who are demonstrating the willingness to learn and endeavor to become better golfers.”
