ADVERTISEMENTS
Former Scappoose quarterback Derek Anderson, who was released by the Cleveland Browns after a tough season last year, has signed with the Arizona Cardinals to start as quarterback, several on-line sports media sources are reporting.
News of the deal surfaced early Wednesday afternoon.
Several on-line sports outlets, including www.ESPN.com, are reporting that Anderson signed a two-year deal worth $7.25 million, with $3.25 million guaranteed. Additional performance bonus incentives could raise the deal to a maximum of $18 million.
Anderson has been in talks with Arizona and the Seattle Seahawks over the past few weeks in an attempt to land at a new NFL team following his release from the Browns. He was in Arizona on Friday.
Here is the Spotlight story as it appeared in the Wednesday, March 17 edition:
Derek Anderson will not be playing pro football for the Cleveland Browns anymore. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Now he has a shot at landing a new gig in the NFL as close as Seattle.
Anderson, the former Scappoose High and Oregon State University quarterback, was released by the Browns on Tuesday last week–shortly after they announced picking up Seattle back-up quarterback Seneca Wall-ace in a trade.
By Wednesday, Anderson was in Seattle for a two-day try-out, and Friday he was off to Arizona for another. Carolina and Buffalo have also expressed interest.
Anderson’s tenure in Cleveland was not all sunshine and romance. He took a parting shot via e-mail at Cleveland fans, but later retracted his comments.
