Individually, the girls on the St. Helens High tennis team might not have an elite athlete or two, but Coach Mike Gregor feels as a team they will be pretty solid.
He had 39 girls turnout for tennis this spring, but says many of those aren’t looking for competition as much as a life skill.
Still, the team brings back five varsity players from last season that are expect to help them in the Northwest Oregon Conference.
All seniors, returning varsity players include Kailey Sound, Kelli Wood, Chelsea Kelly, Kaicee Giroski, and Casey Sheppeard.
The Lady Lions finished second in the league last season behind Wilsonville, but sent just one player on to state, Slovakian exchange student Natalia Djockova. She had to default, though, when she became ill.
“Wilsonville will probably be the strongest team in the district,” Gregor said. “They’re at least three-time district champs. They’re just really tough.”
