“Carly Moore had two goals, Shaylee McGuire had two goals, and Ariel Viera had a goal. The young players played well and with the early goals I was able to give the underclassmen some good time on the pitch.”
Dorough was impressed with the play of precocious freshman Viera. “I started Ariel up front and she produced a hat trick (three goals). Meagan Peckover, another freshman, started on defense and played very well alongside senior Emily Flanagan,” Dorough said.
The result was a 3-0 shut-out of Tillamook.
Next up was Banks and it was another 3-0 Scappoose win. McGuire put in her third goal of the match and Viera added two more to give her six on the day.
“Katie Engstrom played the whole time in goal and had her third shut out in a row,” Dorough added. “In all I was able to take 19 players to the jamboree and all got to play good minutes. Some are still trying to earn a spot on the varsity and others are vying for playing time once the season starts.”
Scappoose plays in a 14-team 4A/3A/2A/1A district. They’ll face all the Cowapa League schools (Astoria, Seaside, Banks, Tillamook, and Yamhill-Carlton), plus Faith Bible, Valley Catholic, OES (Oregon Episcopal School), Catlin Gabel, and Rainier. The only district schools not on their schedule are Gaston, Life Christian, and Clatskanie.
The top three teams in the district make the state playoffs, but there also is a league playoff system.
